Lacee Logan and the Nettes are favored to defend the crown!

Sudan Head Coach Jason Cooper says, "We need to increase the intensity of our practices. We have really fallen off from that the last few weeks. Last year we had some incredibly intense practice sessions which I beleive made the difference for us in those big playoff games. Our region in loaded with good teams. Gruver, Canadian, Wellington, Smyer, Anton and Tahoka have all been ranked in the top ten this year not to mention Lockney, Claude and Farwell out of our district are no slouches. Whoever makes it out of Region I will no doubt be battle tested and ready for the State Tournament. Right now it is anyone's ball game. We played a very tough pre-district schedule and we will be ready."

A Muenster Hornet at the line.

Muenster Heach Coach Jason Atcheson says, "We always feel like if we take care of the ball and defend we will have a chance against anyone. It is going to be very tough and we look foward to the challenge. Meridian, Irion County, Mason, Goldwaite, Eula, Albany, Seymour. I think the region is wide open. Whoever is playing the best will have a chance. We have lost a few games in O.T. this year to Lovejoy & La Vega, and learned that we have to be focused and prepared to play. Ponder kicked our tail-when we are not focused, proving it can get ugly. Ponder hit seven 3s against us and shot 54%. They just run their offense so well and really made it tough on us. La Vega was very athletic and they have a great big girl inside so those would be the two teams I think are tough this year. For us everyone seems to focus on our inside game with Taylor Klement, Shaina Felderhoff, and Demi Koelzer but when are guards play well (Lana and Lia Heers) we tend to play well. I take great pride in the fact that we truly are a team. We have had five different girls lead our team in scoring this year. The thing I really love is that our girls have great character. We just do not have many problems in the classroom or on the court."

In our pre-season poll at least we had Muenster and Meridian.

Our Pre-Season Top 5

1 Muenster
2 Goldthwaite
3 Irion County
4 Meridian
5 Albany

Meridian Head Coach Griffin Fields says, "We need to improve our consistency shooting the ball. Muenster is the favorite in our region, I believe they are the team you have to beat. Muenster's overall team play and team quickness is very impressive. We have learned how to be mentally tough and to handle the physicality of the game. Our game versus Evant stands out because we let them out-physical us and take us away from what we were supposed to be doing. Our bench must improve their consistency so we can make a good run at this. I'm proud of how we have worked extremely hard the entire year to get to this point."

Ieasha Simmons wants the ball and the chance
to lead the Hubbard Jaguars to the show.

Hubbard Head Coach Susan Henderson says, "What we need to improve on the most is being consistent. Lovelady, Martins Mill, and Cayuga are the toughest teams we may face in our region and all solid teams. Our losses have shown us that every shot counts. Losing to Cayuga by five, our only loss in district play, stands out the most, because our shots were just not falling. We only shot 22% from the field and missed 16 free throws in that game. It was a big eye opener for our team. I feel like every player is an integral part of our team, but Rayven Cornish, our post, has proven that she can often be the difference in our game. As a team, we need to utilize her strength more. Out of all the teams we have played this year T.K. Gorman, a private school out of Tyler impressed me the most. They were very fundamental and could handle the ball well. They were also very consistent from the field, both inside the paint and the perimeter. I really like this year’s group because they have come together and developed a sense of unity. They work hard to encourage and make each other better."

Cayuga Wildcats

Cayuga Head Coach Terry Short said, "We have to take it one step at a time, we have lost the regional quaterfinal game three years in a row. Our goal this year is the regional tournament. Once you get there anything can happen. Martin's Mill, Lovelady, Hubbard & Tenaha are the toughest teams in our region. We played a really tough schedule this year. We played 2- 4A teams, 6- 3A teams and 6- 2A teams. Preseason made us a much better team especially the Whataburger tournament where we saw a bunch of quality teams. Losing to 3A powerhouses like Argyle and Wylie propelled us to another level going into our tough district. We have 3 seniors, but my other starters and subs are freshman and one sophmore. The youngsters have really come on this season and have played well lately. The best team we played was 4A Huntsville. They completely overmatched us with speed and height. This is special group of young ladies. The senior leadership is great and they will be missed on and off the court. I am proud of how they have been great leaders for the young players on the team."

Here come the Port Aransas Marlins!

Thorndale Head Coach Brad Dickerson says, "We will need to be more consistent defensively. I think the favorites may be Nueces Canyon and Louise with players back from last year, but I think this region is wide open. Losing the first two games of the year really helped us focus and realize that we needed to get better. We were a young team with no identity and I think that was pivotal to our growth as a team. Margie Llana could be the player that steps up her game and makes a difference for us in the playoffs. She has moved from playing inside to outside more this year. She's improved tremendously. If she can continue to be solid we will be tougher to beat. I would have to say the best team we have seen all year is Bryan Rudder. Extremely athletic and deep! And they can beat you in lots of ways. I look at my team as a group of girls that have been underrated by most. They took it to heart and have played with a chip on their shoulder. They are easy to coach and fun to be around. They play extremely hard. Our motto this year has been "Keep your fork, the best is yet to come" they've rallied around that and are making it happen."
